Live Your Calling: What On Earth Am I Here For? Part 6
As we finish our series What On Earth Am I Here For? Let’s remember what we’ve learned. God has called us to be loved (by Him), to belong (to His family), to become (more like Him), and to bless (others). The last calling God has for us is that we are called to be sent.
God’s plan for history is to gather a family, one that will love and live with him forever. Ephesians 1:5 says “His (God’s) unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave Him great pleasure.”
What does this have to do with us? We are first called to join God’s family and then we are sent to bring others into God’s family. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:18 “Through Christ, God made peace between us and Himself. Then God gave us the work of bringing others into peace with Him.” Sounds a little scary? In John 20:21 Jesus said “Peace be with you! AS the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” We’re not in this alone, we have God on our side. Really, the Church is just ordinary people – empowered by God – making a difference together – wherever they are! John 15:16 says “You did not choose me but I choose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit – Fruit that will last.” Acts 20:24 says “The most important thing is that I complete my mission the work that the Lord Jesus gave me – to tell people the Good News about God’s grace.” God has a mission for us, a message for the world He wants to send through us.
So what do we do?
- Pray. We pray that people will say yes to God. Pray that people will say yes to being loved by God, yes to belonging to His family, yes to becoming more like Him, yes to blessing others and yes to sharing His good news with others. Everybody deserves to hear the truth of God’s love. So we pray that God will send people out.
- Give. We give to help others go. Whether or not we are in a position to go ourselves we can give to help others go. God has been generous with us so we should be generous and help get the Word out.
- Step out. We can step out in faith. God’s army, God’s mission is one hundred percent volunteer. There’s no conscription. There’s no draft. We have to volunteer. Are we available to God? Are we willing to let God use us? Church history is full of ordinary people who did extraordinary things for God just because they were available.
- Go. We go where we can now. Maybe we can’t go to Berlin today but we can go somewhere today. We live in an area that is full of people with economic brokenness, relational brokenness, substance abuse, spiritual darkness and hopelessness. There’s plenty of ministry that can happen right in our own backyards we just have to leave the comfort of our couches and go outside. If we are going to do the mission of Christ, we must align ourselves with people who are lost. Our lives must intersect.
2 Timothy 4:5 says “Work at bringing others to Christ.” Why? Because they’ll experience His love, His forgiveness, His peace, His purpose. They’ll experience their past forgiven, a purpose for living. All of these things God has given us, He’s offering to them but they won’t know it unless we share.
